Common features of amaZioni churches
Although African Zionist churches are extremely diverse, they share a recognisable cluster of features — distinctive dress, prophets and healing, blessed water and objects, and lively worship — that mark them out across Southern Africa.
White robes and uniforms
Members are widely associated with white robes, frequently combined with coloured cloth, cords, sashes and turbans (green and blue are especially common). Specific colours and garments identify a member's particular church, and uniforms are understood to express shared identity and dignity.
Prophets, healing and holy water
Prophets hold a central role, receiving guidance through dreams and visions and praying for the sick. Faith-healing is a defining practice, and blessed ("holy") water — along with blessed staffs, sticks and cords — is used in healing, purification and protection. Many members favour these spiritual remedies for illness and misfortune.
Worship, baptism and taboos
Worship is typically participatory and often held outdoors, with singing, drumming, clapping and circle dancing. Baptism is by immersion in water, frequently performed three times. Common observances include taboos against alcohol, tobacco and pork, purification rites, and in some churches particular days of rest or Sabbath observance.
A vast and varied movement
There is no single Zionist church or headquarters: the amaZioni comprise thousands of independent congregations, from very large national bodies such as the Zion Christian Church to small local groups. The degree to which each church blends Christian and African traditional elements varies considerably.
