Bagananwa Clan — History & Meaning

Pedi clan · Sepedi

Totem Baboon (Sotho/Tswana: Tshwene). 'Bagananwa' is a variant spelling/pronunciation of Bahananwa.

History & origin

Bagananwa (Gananwa) is an alternative rendering of the Bahananwa, the Sotho-Tswana people of the Blouberg in Limpopo (see Bahananwa). The same group is referred to by both names. Their ancestry is linked to the Bahurutshe; under Lebogo (Malebogo) they settled the Blouberg Mountains near the Soutpansberg, received Berlin missionaries from 1868 (Rev. Beyer) under Kgoshi Matsiokwane, and resisted the ZAR in the 1894 Malebogo War. The baboon (tshwene) is the totem, adopted at Blouberg after the earlier springbok totem was abandoned in tradition.
