Bahlakoana Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Crocodile (English) — koena (Sesotho); Bahlakoana are a Bakwena offshoot

History & origin

Bahlakoana (Bahlakwana) stem from the Bakwena and therefore venerate the crocodile. Tradition records them as descendants within the Bakwena lineage (e.g. born of Disema and Molapo, sons of Napo). Two complementary explanations of the name survive: the bahlaha-koana ('those who came/emerged from over there', i.e. seen as outsiders/newcomers, reflecting a nomadic existence) narrative, and the tlhakoana ('a small hoof', i.e. a junior/devalued house in polygamous family dynamics) narrative. They are listed among the clans that coalesced into the Basotho nation and are found in Lesotho and the Free State.
