Bahlakwana Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Most traditions give the wild cat / and in some lineages associations link them to the Batlokoa cluster; totem commonly cited as the cat (katse) or tlokwe (wild cat)

History & origin

Bahlakwana are a smaller Sotho clan of the Caledon valley and Free State, often grouped historically near the Batlokoa and Basia clusters and incorporated into the Basotho nation during the formation of Moshoeshoe I's kingdom. They appear in standard lists of the constituent clans of the Basotho. Detailed independent origin traditions are sparse and partly conflated with neighbouring cat-totem clans, so totem attributions are given with some caution.
