Totem Fish (tlhapi) — used as a distinguishing emblem; as a Barolong offshoot their ancestral totem is the kudu (tholo)
History & origin
Bahlaping (Batlhaping) is a Tswana clan, an offshoot of the Barolong, settled chiefly in the Northern Cape and the Vaal/Harts river region. The name means 'people of the fish', traced to their settlement on the Vaal (Kolong) where fish became a dietary staple — a marked departure for a Sotho-Tswana group, since fish was generally not eaten. By the late 18th and 19th centuries the Batlhaping were a prominent polity centred on towns such as Dithakong and Kuruman, with significant contact with European missionaries (notably Robert Moffat at Kuruman) and traders. Chiefs such as Mothibi are well documented in early missionary records.
