Bahlokoa Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Crocodile - kwena/koena (the Bahlakoana are a branch of the Bakoena).
History & origin
Bahlokoa is a variant of Bahlakoana (also Bahlakwana). They are a Bakoena (crocodile-totem) lineage, in tradition descended from Disema (Lisema) and Molapo, sons of Napo. They were one of the clans incorporated into the Basotho nation during the nation-building of the 1820s amid the Difaqane. Their name is explained in oral tradition in several ways: from being mocked as outsiders ('bahlaha-koana', 'those from over there'), from being likened to a small/worthless hoof ('tlhakoana'), or from asylum-seekers saying 're tlha koa' ('we come from there'). They embraced the once-derisive name as their own. (Note: distinct from the Makholokoe; spellings vary.)
