Bakgolokwe Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Domestic fowl / chicken (also rendered as the cat in some Tlokwa-linked traditions); native term commonly given as kgaka/kgogo varies by source
History & origin
Bakgolokwe is a variant spelling/pronunciation of Makgolokwe (the Kholokoe). They are a Sotho-Tswana group founded by Kgetsi, one of the sons of Tabane of the Bakgatla, making them a sibling nation of the Bapedi, Batlokwa, Maphuthing and Basia. They are associated with the eastern Free State and the Caledon valley, and were displaced and scattered during the Difaqane. Because 'Bakgolokwe' and 'Makgolokwe' denote the same lineage, see the Makgolokwe entry for the fuller account.
