Bakholokoe Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Documented as an offshoot of the Bakgatla stock; commonly cited totem is the monkey (kgabo) consistent with Bakgatla origin, though sources vary

History & origin

The Bakholokoe (Makholokoe/Kholokoe) are recorded as one of the clans that branched off from the Bakgatla ba Mmakau, alongside the Bapedi, Batlokwa, Baphuthi and Basia. They became Sesotho-speaking and settled in the eastern Free State / north-eastern Lesotho region (the Bakholokoe are historically associated with the area around modern QwaQwa/Witsieshoek and the upper Caledon). Their chief Oetsi (Witsie) is remembered from 19th-century conflicts with the Boers. Totem attributions in the literature are less consistent than the Bakholokoe's documented Bakgatla descent.
