Bakwena ba Mokoteli Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Crocodile (English) — kwena/koena (Sesotho)

History & origin

The Bamokoteli are a branch of the Bakwena (crocodile) clan and the royal house of Lesotho. Moshoeshoe I, founder and first king of the Basotho nation, was the son of Mokhachane, a minor Bamokoteli chief. Born at Menkhoaneng, Moshoeshoe rose to prominence around 1820, settling first at Butha-Buthe and from 1824 at the mountain stronghold of Thaba Bosiu, where he gathered refugees of the Difaqane into a unified Basotho polity. He skilfully resisted Ndebele, Boer (Orange Free State wars) and other pressures, ultimately securing British protection for Basutoland in 1868. The Mokoteli line remains the royal dynasty of Lesotho.
