Bakwena ba Monaheng Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Crocodile (English) — kwena/koena (Sesotho)
History & origin
A senior sub-clan of the Bakwena from which the Lesotho royal line ultimately descends. Tradition records that Monaheng settled at Futhane near present-day Fouriesburg, where he encountered the Bafokeng of Komane, married Komane's daughter and grew greatly in influence and power. The Bamonaheng are counted among the principal Bakwena houses of Lesotho, and Moshoeshoe I's Bamokoteli line traces back into this senior Bakwena stock. They venerate the crocodile.
