Bakwena ba Sefatela Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Crocodile (kwena / koena)
History & origin
Another house within the Bakoena (crocodile-totem) cluster, the senior Sotho group from which Moshoeshoe I and the Lesotho royal line descend. 'Sefatela' identifies a specific Bakoena lineage/house. As with other Bakoena sections, it traces to the wider Kwena dispersal of Sotho-Tswana peoples and settled in the Caledon/highveld region. I can attest to the Bakoena membership and crocodile totem; the founder-level detail of the Sefatela house is local clan tradition and I will not invent specifics beyond that.
