Totem Crocodile (kwena) — a Bakoena lineage
History & origin
The Bamonaheng are a branch of the Bakoena (crocodile) clan named after the ancestor Monaheng, originally called Kali, who is regarded as the forefather of most Bakoena people of Lesotho. Monaheng was a man of growing influence whose descendants formed several groups, including the Bamokoteli, Bamantsane and Bamasekake. The Bamokoteli sub-branch of the Bamonaheng — a small chiefdom in northern Lesotho under chief Mokhachane in the 1810s — produced Moshoeshoe I, founder of the Basotho kingdom. The Bamonaheng are thus central to the royal genealogy of Lesotho.
