Banareng Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Buffalo (English) — nare (Sesotho/Sepedi); some sections also associate with kgomo (bovine)
History & origin
Banareng ('people of the buffalo') is a Northern Sotho (Sepedi-/Lobedu-influenced) cluster in the Limpopo region. Documented sections include the Letswalo/Mmamathola near Metz (Tzaneen), the Mahlo / Banareng ba Sekororo, and the Banareng ba Mmutlana in Sekhukhuneland (Lulu mountains). Their history reflects migration and settlement among the Lobedu and Roka peoples; the Banareng ba Letswalo adopted Khelobedu (Lobedu speech) through contact at Agatha, while the Sekororo section retained Roka linguistic features. The buffalo totem is inherited patrilineally and traditionally subject to avoidance taboos.
