Bangologa Clan — History & Meaning

Tswana clan · Setswana

Totem Not reliably documented as a single distinct totem (Bakgalagadi sub-groups vary)

History & origin

The Bangologa are one of the principal sub-groups of the Bakgalagadi (Kgalagadi, 'people of the Kalahari'), a Sotho-Tswana people of Botswana, eastern Namibia and the Gantsi/Kalahari region. The Bakgalagadi are thought to have moved from the Transvaal area of South Africa into the Kalahari relatively early (traditions cite movement from c. 1400 CE onward), settling the desert and Gantsi country, and they share common ancestral roots with the other Sotho-Tswana. The Bangologa give their name to the Sengologa dialect, one of the main dialects of Sekgalagadi (alongside Sebolaongwe, Sekgwatheng, etc.). Other Bakgalagadi sections include the Bakgwatheng, Babolaongwe, Baphaleng and Bashaga. Under the Tswana merafe system the Bakgalagadi were historically subordinate to dominant cattle-owning Tswana groups.
