Bapheating Clan — History & Meaning

Tswana clan · Setswana

Totem Phuti / phuthi (duiker) — the clan name derives from the duiker.

History & origin

Bapheating is a spelling variant of Baphuting/Maphuting, a Sotho-Tswana clan whose name and totem are the duiker (phuti). Tradition holds the duiker was chosen because it was abundant in their original homeland. The Maphuting are part of the wider Sotho-Tswana amalgamation of the southern Bantu; the related amaZizi-descended Baphuthi later adopted the duiker totem after contact with the Maphuting, even changing their name. The duiker totem is also used by branches of the Makholokoe, Bangwato and Bangwaketse. Spelling can be confused with the Bafokeng or other groups, but the documented sense here is the duiker-totem Baphuting/Maphuting.
