Baphetla Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Documented sources record the Phetla among the early Caledon-valley peoples but do not give a single firmly attested animal totem; they are linked to the Baphuthing/Maphuthing cluster (phuthi/duiker) and are an old pre-Difaqane Sotho group.
History & origin
The Baphetla (Phetla) are one of the oldest Sotho-speaking groups of the trans-Caledon region: tradition records them as already settled along the edges of the Caledon valley (in present-day Lesotho/eastern Free State) by the 1600s, making them among the earliest inhabitants of that area. They are reckoned among the senior pre-Moshoeshoe clans associated with the Phuthing/Phuthi cluster of the upper Caledon, and were drawn into the Basotho polity during the upheavals of the early 19th century. Their early settlement is well attested; specific totem detail is reported less consistently in the sources, so I note their origin and region but do not assert a totem I cannot verify.
