Baphuthi Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Duiker (Sesotho: phuthi), a small antelope; some Baphuthi tradition associates the clan with the spider (descent from heaven on a spider's web)
History & origin
The Baphuthi are a clan of Nguni origin who settled for several generations in what is now southern Lesotho, becoming Sesotho-speaking. Their totem is the phuthi (duiker). Their most famous leader was Chief Moorosi (Morosi), whose father submitted to Moshoeshoe I's authority around 1825. Moorosi built a powerful chiefdom in the Quthing district and led the 1879 Moorosi (Baphuthi) rebellion against Cape colonial rule, defending his mountain stronghold through an eight-month siege before being defeated and killed, after which the chiefdom was broken up.
