Totem Elephant (Sotho/Tswana: Tlou)
History & origin
The Baroka are a Northern Sotho (Sesotho sa Leboa) people of Limpopo whose totem is the elephant (tlou). They were among the many constituent groups of the Pedi (Marota) empire, owing allegiance to the Pedi kings during the polity's height. Baroka communities (including the well-known Baroka ba Nkwana line) are settled in the Sekhukhune and wider Limpopo region.
