Barolong-boo-Seleka Clan — History & Meaning
Tswana clan · Setswana
Totem Originally iron (tshipi); later the kudu (tholo)
History & origin
One of the four principal Barolong sections (after Tau's death c.1670), descended from the Seleka line. They are best known for settling at Thaba Nchu in the present-day Free State, South Africa, where they were granted land and aided early Voortrekkers and Wesleyan missionaries in the 1830s. Under leaders such as Moroka II, Thaba Nchu became a significant Barolong polity. They share the Barolong iron-working tradition (totem iron/tshipi, later kudu/tholo).
