Barolong-boo-Tshidi Clan — History & Meaning
Tswana clan · Setswana
Totem Originally iron (tshipi); later the kudu (tholo)
History & origin
This is the same clan as the Barolong-boo-Ratshidi ('boo-Tshidi' and 'boo-Ratshidi' are variant renderings of the same name, after the ancestor Tshidi). They are one of the four principal Barolong sections that formed after the death of King Tau (c.1670), centred on Mahikeng (Mafikeng) in North West Province with kin in Botswana. Like all Barolong they descend from the iron-working ancestor Morolong; the ancient totem is iron (tshipi), later the kudu (tholo). Kgosi Montshiwa was their notable 19th-century leader.
