Basia ba Mokhethi Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Cat / wild cat (katse) — the Basia are traditionally the 'people of the cat'
History & origin
The Basia (Basiea) are a Sotho clan whose name and totem are linked to the cat (katse/tshie). They feature among the Caledon-valley Basotho groups that coalesced into Moshoeshoe I's kingdom in the early 19th century during the upheavals of the Lifaqane/Difaqane. 'Mokhethi' names a particular Basia house/lineage. I am confident on the Basia clan identity and the cat totem association; finer Mokhethi-house genealogy is local tradition.
