History & origin
Basia ("people of the cat") are a Sotho clan whose totem is the cat (katse). They are counted among the older Sotho groupings of the Caledon valley and Free State and were incorporated into the Basotho nation under Moshoeshoe I. They are frequently listed alongside Batlokoa and Bafokeng among the early clans of the region.
