Basiea Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Wild cat (Sesotho: katse / tlhose); the cat
History & origin
The Basia (Basiea, 'people of the cat') trace to Mosia, a son of the Bakgatla chief Tabane and the Bafokeng princess Mathulare; Mosia broke away from the Bakgatla to found his own clan, so the Basia share the Bakgatla genealogical root. Their totem is the wild cat (katse). The Basia migrated into the Caledon/Free State and Lesotho regions and were among the Sotho clans drawn into the Basotho nation during the Difaqane era.
