Bataung ba Moletsane Clan — History & Meaning
Sotho clan · Sesotho
Totem Lion (tau)
History & origin
The Bataung are 'the people of the lion' (tau = lion), one of the major Sotho clans. The Bataung ba Moletsane are specifically the followers of Chief Moletsane, a prominent 19th-century Bataung leader. During the Difaqane, Moletsane's Bataung were a significant fighting power on the highveld and in the Caledon region; he eventually allied with and settled under Moshoeshoe I, becoming one of the principal Basotho chiefs, associated with the Mekuatling area. I am confident on the lion totem, the Bataung identity, and Chief Moletsane's documented historical role.
