Batebele Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Among Sotho-Tswana Matebele groups the totem is commonly the tlou (elephant) or the kwena (crocodile) depending on the specific lineage; 'Tebele/Matebele' marks Nguni origin rather than a single totem.

History & origin

Batebele (Matebele) within the Sotho world are clans of Nguni origin who were absorbed into Sotho-Tswana society - the Sesotho/Setswana name 'Letebele/Matebele' was applied by Sotho-Tswana speakers to Nguni incomers and later famously to the Ndebele. In the building of the Basotho nation, Matebele groups were among the refugee bands incorporated during the Difaqane and were noted (in oral tradition) as capable fighters and as people skilled in medicine/healing. Because they are an incorporated Nguni-derived stratum rather than a single descent line, totems vary by sub-lineage; the broad marker is their Nguni/Ndebele ancestry assimilated into Sotho-speaking communities. (Distinct from Mzilikazi's Matabele kingdom of Zimbabwe, though the ethnonym shares the same root.)
