Batlhaping Clan — History & Meaning
Tswana clan · Setswana
Totem Kudu (Setswana: tholo), shared with the Barolong from whom they broke away. The name Batlhaping is popularly linked to tlhapi (fish), but scholarly sources note fish has no genuine totemic status for them.
History & origin
A southern Tswana group that broke away from the Barolong (a lineage dating to the 13th century). During the reign of the Barolong king Tshesebe (c. 1565-1595) a group under the sub-chief Phuduhutswana migrated south to Dikgatlong, near the confluence of the Vaal (Lekwa) and Harts (Kolong) rivers, where fish became a dietary staple, popularly explaining the name. They later settled at Kuruman under the noted chief Molehabangwe (died 1812). Today the Batlhaping live mainly around Kuruman, Danielskuil, Kimberley and Vryburg in the Northern Cape.
