Batlhaping Clan — History & Meaning

Sotho clan · Sesotho

Totem Tlhapi (fish) - English: fish. (Sesotho: tlhapi; Setswana: tlhapi.)

History & origin

The Batlhaping ('people of the fish') are a Tswana people who broke away from the Barolong, taking the fish (tlhapi) as their totem - the only major Sotho-Tswana clan with a fish totem, a notable departure since they were an inland people. They established themselves along the Vaal and Harts River systems in what is now the Northern Cape/North West, continuing the Barolong iron-working and trading tradition. In the early 19th century they were the southernmost and one of the best-documented Tswana groups (centred at Dithakong/Lattakoo and later Kuruman), among the first to host European missionaries (the London Missionary Society, Robert Moffat at Kuruman). Their chiefs included Mothibi and Mahura.
