Batlharo Clan — History & Meaning

Tswana clan · Setswana

Totem Baboon (Setswana: tshwene); they are also called Batshweneng, reflecting close kinship with the Bahurutshe

History & origin

A Tswana group of the Northern Cape and southern Botswana, closely related to the Bahurutshe — sources describe the two as one people by origin, sharing the tshwene (baboon) totem and similar clan praises. They are often found alongside the Batlhaping in the Kuruman district. In the mid-19th century, amid the Tlharo/Boer conflicts, sections of the Batlharo migrated for safety, including to the Tsabong area (around 1845). They are listed among the recognised subgroups of the Batswana.
