History & origin

Batlokoa (Batlokwa, "people of the wild cat") are a Sotho-Tswana clan with branches in Botswana (Batlokwa of Gaborone area) and in the Free State/Lesotho. In the Caledon region the Batlokoa are famous for being led during the difaqane by the formidable queen-regent MaNthatisi and later her son Sekonyela, who were among Moshoeshoe I's most persistent rivals until Sekonyela's defeat in 1853. Their wars and raids in the 1820s-1850s are a central episode of Free State/Lesotho history.
