History & origin
The Bhaca (amaBhaca) are a people who emerged in the early 19th century during the Mfecane upheavals. They originated from Nguni groups (notably the Zelemu and Kwetshube) that fled the conflicts in present-day KwaZulu-Natal and consolidated under the leadership of Madzikane in the 1820s. The name 'Bhaca' derives from 'ukubhaca' (to hide/take refuge), reflecting their origin as refugee groups that regrouped in the mountainous areas. They settled in the region around present-day Mount Frere and Mzimkhulu in the southern part of the former Transkei (today eastern Eastern Cape).
Notable figures & facts
Madzikane, the founding chief who unified the various refugee groups into the Bhaca nation; his sons Ncaphayi and Diko continued the lineage.
