History & origin
Bhungane is not an independent clan so much as a dynastic name within the amaHlubi (Radebe/Hadebe) royal house, and it functions as a core clan praise of the Radebe people. It refers above all to King Bhungane kaNsele, the most renowned ruler of the amaHlubi, whose reign (in the era before the Mfecane) is remembered as the zenith of Hlubi power in the upper Thukela/Drakensberg region of present-day KwaZulu-Natal. The name is therefore carried by Radebe descendants as part of their clan identity rather than denoting a separate origin.
