History & origin
Dalindyebo (Alava) kaNgangelizwe (c.1865-1920) was paramount king of the abaThembu, son of Ngangelizwe, succeeding him in 1885. Educated at the Clarkebury mission institution, he was known by the Anglicised name Aliva (Oliver). He ruled under colonial administration and engaged with mission Christianity and emerging African political life: he attended the coronation of Edward VII in 1904 and appeared before the Universal Races Congress in London in 1911. The Dalindyebo name remains that of the senior abaThembu royal house, later borne by King Sabata Dalindyebo and the present Thembu king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo. The abaThembu royal house is also the clan into which Nelson Mandela was born (Madiba clan, of the Thembu).
