Dlamini Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin
Dlamini is one of the oldest and most widespread Nguni clan names, traced to the figure remembered as Dlamini I (also called Matalatala), an eMbo-Nguni leader of the line that lived on the seaward side of the Lubombo (Lebombo) mountains south of present-day Maputo around the 16th-17th centuries. From this stock came the royal house of Eswatini (the Swazi nation), with Ngwane III regarded as an early Dlamini king and Sobhuza I consolidating power in the 19th century. Through southward Nguni migrations the name spread very widely; among Xhosa-speaking communities of the Eastern Cape it is carried notably by the amaZizi, who are reckoned alongside the amaHlubi and amaBhele as descendants of Mhuhu and who became part of the Mfengu cluster.
