Dube Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Dube is a surname of Nguni origin found across Zulu, Ndebele and Swazi communities of southern Africa. In the Swazi nation, which was assembled by the Dlamini royal house out of many incorporated groups, the Dube are not counted among the original founding bemdzabuko ('true Swazi') clans, nor among the long-resident emakhandzambili ('those found ahead'). They fall instead into the category of later-arriving Nguni groups (sometimes termed labafik'emuva, 'those who came after') who were absorbed into the kingdom as it expanded. The name itself derives from the Nguni word for zebra (idube/lidvuba), and clans bearing it are also strongly represented in KwaZulu-Natal, reflecting the shared Nguni heritage and the population movements that distributed the name across the region.
