Faku Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin

Faku kaNgqungqushe (c.1780-1867) was the great king of the amaMpondo, son of King Ngqungqushe and a Mpondomise queen, born at the royal centre of the Mpondo kingdom in the region between the Mzimkhulu and Mthatha rivers. Reigning for roughly half a century, he transformed the Mpondo from a loose grouping of tributary chiefdoms into a centralised, militarily capable and agriculturally prosperous kingdom. He skilfully navigated the upheavals of the Mfecane and the pressures of the Cape and Natal colonies through diplomacy and treaty, and partly as a result the Mpondo kingdom was among the last African states in the region to fall under colonial rule (annexed after his death). The Faku name remains central to amaMpondo royal identity.
