Gamede Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Gamede (Gamedze in siSwati orthography) is one of the emakhandzambili clans, "those found ahead" — peoples who were already settled on the land before the immigration and expansion of the Dlamini royal house. As such, the Gamedze are part of the older population that the Dlamini found in the region and subsequently incorporated into the Swazi state, alongside other emakhandzambili clans such as the Fakudze, Ngcamphalala and Magagula. The clan is common in the more rural Lubombo and Shiselweni regions of Eswatini.
Notable figures & facts
As an emakhandzambili clan, the Gamedze are recognised as part of the original population that predated Dlamini settlement, and the surname remains common in the Lubombo and Shiselweni regions.
