Gxarha Clan — History & Meaning

Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

Gxarha is a clan (isiduko) associated with the amaMpondomise, a Xhosa-speaking people of the Eastern Cape whose traditional territory lay around Tsolo and Qumbu. Documented Mpondomise genealogies place Gxarha as a son within the Mpondomise royal/noble line (recorded as a son of Hlombose), with descendant lines including Cwerha, Vambane, Mahlahlana, Mlawu, Potwana and Siyoyo. The amaMpondomise themselves trace descent through Njanya to the ancestral figure Mpondomise, forming part of the broader abaMbo grouping of Nguni peoples.

Notable figures & facts

The Gxarha name is also borne by the Gxarha River near the coast of the former Transkei, which became historically significant as the site associated with the prophet Nongqawuse and the Xhosa Cattle-Killing of 1856-1857. (This is a geographic/historical association rather than a documented act of the clan lineage itself.)
