Hlatshwayo Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
The Hlatshwayo (also Hlatshwako) trace their lineage to Ngwanya, a son of Ngwane waDlamini, and are understood to have separated from the Nkosi/Dlamini line before the Swazi nation was fully formed. During the upheavals of the early 19th-century Nguni wars, the clan was scattered: some branches followed Soshangana (Manukuza) Nxumalo into Mozambique and were absorbed into the Gaza kingdom, some came under Shaka and became part of the Zulu, and others returned to or remained with the Swazi. Today the surname is spread across Eswatini, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and into Zimbabwe, and is shared among Swazi, Zulu and Ndebele communities.
