Hlubi Clan — History & Meaning

Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

The Hlubi (amaHlubi) are one of the oldest Nguni groups, historically associated with the upper reaches of present-day KwaZulu-Natal near the Drakensberg and the area of modern-day Estcourt/Ladysmith. They trace descent through a line of chiefs and were a significant power before the Mfecane. In the 1820s their kingdom under Mthimkhulu was attacked and scattered (notably by the Ngwane under Matiwane), causing many Hlubi to disperse southward into the Eastern Cape, where they later became associated with the Mfengu and settled in areas such as the Herschel and Matatiele districts.

Notable figures & facts

Mthimkhulu, a paramount chief whose death and the scattering of his people marked a major episode of the Mfecane; Langalibalele, a 19th-century Hlubi chief who clashed with the Natal colonial government in 1873.
