History & origin
Jele (also linked with Gumbi) is a Nguni clan name connected to the Ndwandwe kingdom under Zwide kaLanga. Zwangendaba kaZiguda of the Jele/Gumbi clan was a commander associated with the Ndwandwe and emaNcwangeni alliance in what is now north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal. After Zwide's defeat by Shaka at the Battle of the Mhlatuze River around 1818, the Ndwandwe confederacy fragmented; Zwangendaba led a northward exodus that ultimately founded the Ngoni kingdoms in present-day Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania, while his kinsman Somkhanda (Gumbi) returned to establish the Gumbi chiefdom in the Mkhuze area. The Jele lineage thus belongs to the wider Ndwandwe/Nguni world bordering the Swazi.
Notable figures & facts
