Jola Clan — History & Meaning

Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

Jola is an isiduko of the amaMpondomise, a southern Nguni nation of the Eastern Cape (eastern Transkei, around Tsolo and Qumbu). The Mpondomise trace their descent in the Nguni line from Sibiside through Njanya to Mpondomise (traditionally a twin of Mpondo). Jola is one of the principal Mpondomise clans, and Mpondomise people commonly identify themselves with the saying 'ndingumMpondomise ngohlanga' (I am Mpondomise by lineage). Tradition associates some Mpondomise clans, including Jola lines, with early intermarriage with San communities.
