History & origin
Khawuta (c. 1761-1804) was a son of Gcaleka and the second king of the amaGcaleka, the senior (Gcaleka) house of the Xhosa nation founded after Gcaleka kaPhalo. He continued the Gcaleka royal line in the Transkei. His descendants carry the senior Xhosa kingship. Khawuta is part of the amaTshawe royal lineage tracing back to King Tshawe and ultimately to Xhosa kaMnguni.
Notable figures & facts
King Hintsa kaKhawuta (c. 1789-1835), Khawuta's son, was the Xhosa king killed by colonial forces in 1835 during the frontier wars and remains a major figure in Xhosa history.
