Khoza Clan — History & Meaning

Ndebele clan · isiNdebele

History & origin

Khoza (also rendered Nkhosa/Khosa) is principally a Tsonga clan name, also adopted into Nguni (Swazi/Zulu/Ndebele) communities through long contact and intermarriage in what is now Mpumalanga, Limpopo and southern Mozambique. In Tsonga oral tradition the Khoza are counted among the senior families associated with the Mhlahlandlela/Mabulandlela polity, with genealogies tracing back to an apical ancestor (variously named Rihlanga and his descendants). The name is now common across Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Eswatini. Note: detailed sub-lineage trees come from oral tradition and popular sources and should be treated as such rather than as fixed fact.
