Khumalo Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
The Khumalo are a Nguni clan originating in northern KwaZulu (Zululand), near the Black Mfolozi River, in the country between the Mthethwa and Ndwandwe polities. They belong to the Mntungwa grouping (alongside clans such as Blose, Mabaso and Zikode). The Khumalo chief Mashobane kaMntungwa married a daughter of the Ndwandwe king Zwide; their son was Mzilikazi, who later broke away from Shaka's Zulu kingdom around 1822 and, during the Mfecane, led migrations that founded the Northern Ndebele kingdom of Mthwakazi (Matabeleland) in present-day Zimbabwe. The surname is found among Swazi, Zulu and Ndebele peoples through these regional Nguni connections and population movements.
