Xhosa clan · isiXhosa

History & origin

Khumalo is a Nguni clan that originated in northern KwaZulu-Natal, traditionally traced to Khumalo kaMntungwa whose people settled around the Mkhuze River; the clan is counted among the Mntungwa Nguni. In the early 19th century, under Mzilikazi kaMashobane (c.1790-1868), the Khumalo first served within Shaka's Zulu kingdom, then broke away around 1822 during the Mfecane. Mzilikazi led his followers north, and by about 1840 established the Ndebele (Matabele) kingdom of Mthwakazi across the Limpopo in present-day Zimbabwe, where the Khumalo became the royal house and core of Ndebele identity.
