History & origin
The name Khwane is documented in Xhosa history through Khwane kaLungane, a councillor and warrior in the service of King Tshiwo of the amaXhosa (reign placed at roughly 1670-1702). According to well-attested oral tradition, Khwane had been entrusted with carrying out executions of people condemned as witches, but instead of killing them he hid them in the forest, where their numbers grew and they intermarried with neighbouring Khoikhoi communities. When Tshiwo later faced defeat in battle, Khwane brought this hidden following into the fight and saved the king. As a reward Tshiwo elevated Khwane to chieftainship, ranked alongside the royal amaTshawe, and his followers became known as the amaGqunukhwebe - a chiefdom incorporating displaced Khoikhoi groups (such as the Gonaqua, Hoengeniqua and Inqua). The Khwane line thus founded the ruling dynasty of the amaGqunukhwebe. Region: the chiefdom's territory originally stretched in the western Xhosa borderland (described as roughly from the Buffalo River toward the Zwartkops area), much of it later lost during the colonial Frontier (Xhosa) Wars. Note: 'Khwane' in this documented context is primarily a dynastic/founder name of the amaGqunukhwebe; care should be taken not to assume every modern bearer of the surname descends from this specific line.
