Lambani Clan — History & Meaning

Venda clan · Tshivenda

Totem None of animal/plant origin recorded; Lambani is a nickname-derived surname, not a totem name

History & origin

Lambani (the people of Halambani) is documented as a nickname that became a surname rather than an original totem name. According to Tshivenda tradition recorded by N.C. Netshisaulu, the name derives from the verb 'lamba', 'to refuse'. A man named Lambani was offered a piece of land to rule at a place called Mafukani but refused it, considering the portion too small; he later took a larger portion at the place now called Halambani. Because the surname comes from this episode of refusal (and subsequent conflict over land) rather than from a totem, the group's original totem identity was overlaid by the nickname. Tavhatsindi (Ndou) people are recorded among those settled at Halambani, indicating an elephant-totem (Ndou) substratum in that locality.
