History & origin
Langa (1705-1794) was a son of the Xhosa king Phalo and a brother of Gcaleka and Rharhabe. He founded the amaMbalu sub-group of the Xhosa nation and reigned as chief from about 1740. The amaMbalu under Langa became one of the constituent chiefdoms of the western (Rharhabe-aligned) Xhosa during the colonial frontier era. Langa's sons included Nqeno and Thole.
