History & origin
Mabasa is a Tsonga clan name, particularly associated with the Hlengwe subgroup of the Tsonga (Vatsonga) of Limpopo (South Africa), southern Mozambique and southeastern Zimbabwe. In Tsonga tradition the Mabasa are linked with the Chauke (Cawuke) and traced to the line of Bhangwane, descendant of an ancestor named Xinyori. The name is most prevalent in South Africa, especially Limpopo and Gauteng. Sub-lineage detail derives from oral tradition.
