Mabaso Clan — History & Meaning

Swati clan · siSwati

History & origin

The Mabaso are a Ntungwa-Nguni clan most strongly associated with the Zulu of KwaZulu-Natal, and also present among Swazi communities. Oral tradition places them in the same Ntungwa-Nguni cluster as the Khumalo and Nkosi, descended from Mntungwa kaMbulazi, with Mabaso remembered as the senior (eldest) of these related houses; they carry the Ndabezitha and Mntungwa addresses. The clan is concentrated in KwaZulu-Natal with branches across the eastern regions of Southern Africa. Note: the relative seniority of Mabaso among the Ntungwa houses is asserted in oral tradition and is not universally agreed.
